Would ‘Gangnam Style’ have been as popular without the horse dance routine? And how many people have painted triangles all over their body since Gotye became a worldwide sensation?
Here at Digital Spy we’ve counted down our Top 10 favourite pop music videos of 2012, which can be seen below:
10. David Guetta ft. Sia: ‘She Wolf’
Sometimes when an artist doesn’t appear in their own music videos, it results in the visual being a tad dull. That’s not the case for David Guetta and Sia though, who replaced themselves with a fleeing wolf who has the power to blow both humans and the ground around them up. The result is as euphoric as the track itself.
9. Cheryl: ‘Call My Name’
Chezza didn’t have the best 2011, so it was all eyes on her music career in 2012 to see what she would return with. Brandishing an earworm Calvin Harris production, Cheryl put her dance moves to full use in the accompanying music video, along with a few obligatory sultry glances and plenty of strutting.
8. Little Mix: ‘DNA’
After their uplifting debut ‘Wings’, Little Mix warned fans they’d be going much darker for the follow-up. True to their word, the accompanying video for ‘DNA’ saw them stalk and kidnap a poor bloke called Ryan. Plenty of wind machines, steely poses and a thunder and lightning breakdown resulted in it being one of the most diva-worthy videos from a girl group in years.
7. Florence + the Machine: ‘Spectrum’
Florence Welch’s dream to work with David LaChapelle was finally realised in 2012 and what a pairing it was. Flo’s throne of light, numerous ballet dancers and Egyptian-inspired guards resulted in one of the most vivid spectacles of the year.
6. Maroon 5: ‘Payphone’
Frontman Adam Levine’s foray into TV and film work seemingly rubbed off on him during 2012. The visual for Maroon 5’s 2012 hit ‘Payphone’ tells the tale of a bank robbery escape turned love story, complete with Hollywood-worthy car stunts and lots of explosions.
5. Deadmau5 ft. Gerard Way: ‘Professional Griefers’
If this is the future of Saturday night entertainment, then you can count us in! Deadmau5 and My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way may have teamed up for the track, but they go head-to-head in a robot mouse fight-off to end all fight-offs.
4. Psy: Gangnam Style
Viral hits don’t come bigger than ‘Gangnam Style’. Korean popstar Psy managed the unthinkable and surpassed Justin Bieber’s ‘Baby’ to claim the most-watched video on YouTube, only to go on and hit a billion views. What’s more, the eccentric performer’s horse dance has spawned numerous parodies from celebs and communities alike.
3. Lana Del Rey: ‘Ride’
The end of 2011 saw Lana Del Rey dominate the blogosphere with her hipster-tinged visual for ‘Video Games’. A year on and the starlet hasn’t lost her penchant for an Instagram-tinted romance, and ‘Ride’ provided the ideal soundtrack for her most epic video yet.
2. Katy Perry: ‘Wide Awake’
As successful as Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream era was, it did feel like it went on for an eternity. However, the visual for ‘Wide Awake’ was the perfect closing chapter, presenting the popstar’s highs and lows throughout the period as a wildly mysterious labyrinth.
1. MIA: ‘Bad Girls’
When MIA debuted the video for ‘Bad Girls’ in February, she immediately set the bar sky high. Not only did the female drag racing serve as a dig at some Middle Eastern laws that ban women from driving, they reinforced MIA’s credentials as both a political activist and innovative artist.
